AURORA ARTS THEATRE KICKING OFF 2024 WITH "GODSPELL"

Popular musical debuts Jan. 26; next play and open auditions to be announced in February

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Jan. 26, 2024) — The popular musical “Godspell” is this year’s season opener for Aurora Arts Theatre (AAT), returning to the mainstage Jan. 26–March 9.

Directed by Peter Lopez, who also serves as vocal director for the local production of “Godspell” features a talented cast of 17 performers, complete with a live orchestra, directed by June Vado.

There will be three performances each weekend, a total of 21 in all: Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and a Sunday matinee show at 2:30 p.m.

“We are excited to bring ‘Godspell’ back to the Coastal Bend,” said Dylan Rios, marketing director for Aurora Arts Theatre. “We will be performing the 1971 Off-Broadway version and our talented cast will more than do it justice. Even 50 years after its debut, the show’s message continues to resonate with audiences.”

Now in its 14th year of operation, Aurora Arts Theater continues to draw strong support from theater-goers throughout the Coastal Bend. “Our numbers continue to climb year over year with a 5.4% attendance increase in 2023,” said Rios. “This will be the first of six productions in 2024, including four other musicals and a straight play, so there will be something for everyone.”

Winner of the 1977 Tony Award for Best Original Score, “Godspell,” licensed by Music Theatre International, is an engaging blend of music and storytelling with a powerful message based primarily on the Gospel of Matthew. The show was rescored for an Off-Broadway production, which opened on May 17, 1971, and became a long-running success with worldwide productions following, including a 2011 Broadway revival. Several cast albums have been released over the years with "Day by Day” from the original cast album reaching #13 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the summer of 1972.

AAT will soon prepare for its second show of the season which will be announced in early February. The theatre will post the upcoming audition dates online at auroraartstheatre.com/auditions and on its Facebook page.
