“Cabaret” debuts January 27; open auditions for next production January 29 and 30

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Jan. 24, 2023) — The popular musical “Cabaret” is returning to the Aurora Arts Theatre (AAT) January 27–March 12.

Directed by Peter Lopez, who also serves as vocal director, and choreographed by Brandon Besse, the local production features a talented cast of 17 performers, complete with a live orchestra, directed by Tanya Stegall.

There will be three performances each weekend, a total of 21 in all: Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and a Sunday matinee show at 2:30 p.m.

“We are ready to kick off 2023 with ‘Cabaret,’ the first of six productions this year,” said Dylan Rios, marketing director for Aurora Arts Theater. “We believe our ‘Seasons of Classics’ will appeal to a wide cross-section of our community; there’ll be something for everyone.”

Winner of eight Tony Awards in 1967, including Best Musical, with four more wins after its revival in 1998, “Cabaret” centers around a Berlin nightclub as the 1920s are drawing to a close, featuring English singer Sally Bowles and a garish Master of Ceremonies who welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the cabaret. With the Emcee's bawdy songs and wry commentary, “Cabaret” explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Musical numbers include Willkommen, Cabaret, Don't Tell Mama, and Two Ladies. The local production of “Cabaret” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Tams-Whittmark LLC, www. concordtheatricals.com.

AAT will soon prepare for its second show of the season, “Noises Off” by Michael Frayn directed by Ernest Pruneda. Auditions for this play will be Sunday, Jan. 29, and Monday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m. Called the funniest farce ever written, “Noises Off” presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called “Nothings On.” The play will run March 31 through May 7. Open auditions are for all roles; more information can be found online auroraartstheatre.com/auditions. “Noises Off” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www. concordtheatricals.com

Tickets are $20 for all shows and can be purchased online at auroraartstheatre.com, through the theater box office at 5635 Everhart Road in Corpus Christi, or by calling (361) 851-9700. Box office hours are 11 a.m.–3 p.m., Wednesday through Friday. Patrons requiring special accommodations are urged to notify the Box Office at least two weeks in advance.
